ARTIST BIO

Estelle is a theatre maker who uses puppetry, installation, live art, photography, film and animation. She aims at working in a ‘total’ creation process: from conception to performance. She is especially interested in playing with boundaries between performing, visual and digital art. Her work is often participative, trying to relate to audiences in unexpected ways and exploring the possibilities of immersive work.

Estelle trained as a puppeteer and prop maker and worked as a freelance producer. She has also been involved in a number of community projects.

She is now the Creative Producer of What's Coming out of the Box and spends some time mentoring theatre lovers to start their career.

COMPLETED WORK

RADIO ART

I have experimented with the idea of Radio Art as an extension of performative possibilities.
I have made three pieces so far: ‘Think of Art’, ‘Unborn to Born’ and ‘What the Birds are Saying’.

DANCING WITH MYSELF

‘Dancing with myself’ is an endurance performance piece: dancing in a box for six hours.
Confronting the sexualised idea of of peep-shows, the audience is invited to peep through holes to watch the dancer.

CAPTURE

‘Capture’ is about attempts at capturing human images and capturing human beings. It draws on themes like surveillance, migration, border crossing and human trafficking.

Exploring immersive theatre, puppetry, early motion devices and new technologies.

PUPPETS & DOLLS

Puppets & Dolls has its roots in puppetry but branches into a variety of art forms. It has been expressed as a series of performances, photographs, a slide, a postcard, animations, films and an exhibition. Inspired by an old family snapshot, this research focused on puppets and dolls as objects representing human figures, and exploring the situations in which human beings become objects.

TAKE THE POSE

Commissioned by the MAD Project in 2009, ‘Take the Pose’ combines puppetry, art performance, photography and new technologies. It toured till 2013 and offered a chance to have your 1930s-style seaside snapshot taken.

BREAKFAST FETISHISM

‘Breakfast Fetishism’ is a live art project born from discussions with Ghazoan Ali on the concept of commodity fetishism. The challenge was to make the sharing of philosophical ideas thought provoking and entertaining.

VAPOUR TRAIL

‘Vapour Trail’ is a poetic installation taking you through a wartime trail around Canterbury.

THÉÂTRE À FAIRE

From 2004 to 2007, in Paris, I created and directed an award winning puppet company, Theatre à Faire (Theatre to be Made), producing two family shows which toured numerous theatres, festivals and schools.
